Ontario’s regulated online gambling market has reached another milestone, setting a new all-time wagering record for the second straight month. Players in the province spent a total of CA$8.55 billion (US$6.11 billion) on iGaming during September, according to figures from iGaming Ontario.
Record Wagering and Revenue Growth
The September total represented a 5% increase from August’s CA$8.14 billion and was 30.7% higher than in the same month last year. Casino gaming remained the top-performing vertical, accounting for CA$7.34 billion in wagers. Sports betting followed with CA$1.06 billion, while peer-to-peer poker generated CA$144 million.
Gross gaming revenue for September reached CA$329 million, down 1.8% from August but up 18.8% year-over-year. This marks the sixth consecutive month that provincial iGaming revenue surpassed CA$300 million. Of this total, CA$277.8 million came from casino games, representing 84.4% of all revenue. Sports betting contributed CA$46.5 million, and poker brought in CA$5.1 million.
Ontario also recorded its highest-ever number of active player accounts, reaching approximately 1.2 million for the month. Despite this increase, average revenue per account declined to CA$282, compared to CA$330 in August and CA$320 in September 2024. The figure represents the lowest monthly average since February. Major operators active in the market include FanDuel and BetRivers.
August Sets the Stage for Continued Expansion
The latest milestone followed a strong performance in August 2025, when Ontario’s online gambling handle climbed to CA$8.14 billion—an increase of 34.6% over August 2024. Monthly revenue reached CA$334.8 million, reflecting a 40.5% year-over-year rise. More than 1.016 million active accounts were recorded that month, marking a sharp rebound from July’s lower total of 948,000.
Online casinos were the key driver, representing 89% of total handle and around 80% of operator revenue. For the first time, monthly casino wagers exceeded CA$7 billion, while poker continued to account for only a small share of the total. Ontario’s market also saw new entrants during this period, including DraftKings Golden Nugget Online Gaming, which launched locally in mid-August, and Absolutebet, approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) in early September.
July’s Market Dynamics and Structural Shifts
Ontario’s July 2025 report had already indicated momentum, showing total wagers of CA$7.56 billion, up 24% year-over-year. The number of active accounts fell below one million for the first time since late 2024, but player spending increased, with average revenue per account climbing to CA$328. Casino activity dominated once again, totaling CA$6.74 billion, which accounted for nearly 89% of the total handle.
Sports betting declined slightly to CA$688 million, reflecting typical seasonal patterns, while peer-to-peer poker generated CA$139 million in wagers. During this period, iGaming Ontario underwent major administrative changes following the iGaming Ontario Act 2024, which established the agency as an independent body under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. Leadership changes followed, including the retirement of longtime Executive Director Martha Otton and interim leadership under Chair Heidi Reinhart and acting CEO David Smith.
Ontario’s online gaming market continues to expand, driven by increased operator participation, new brand launches, and steady player engagement. With consistent growth across multiple verticals, the province remains one of North America’s most dynamic regulated iGaming jurisdictions.
