Ontario Online Casino Market Hits New August Records

Ontario-online-casino-GGR-hits-new-record-in-AugustOntario’s regulated iGaming market experienced unprecedented growth in August 2025, reaching milestones that highlight the province’s rapidly expanding online gambling sector. iGaming Ontario (iGO), the provincial regulator, reported that total betting handle climbed to CA$8.14 billion, marking a 34.6% increase compared to August 2024. This achievement makes August the second month in Ontario’s history to surpass the $8 billion threshold, following May 2025.

Revenue and Active Accounts Reach New Heights

Operators collectively generated $334.8 million in monthly revenue, reflecting a 40.5% year-over-year increase. While slightly below the all-time high of $338 million recorded in May, August remains one of the most profitable months since the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) began overseeing the province’s regulated gambling market three and a half years ago.

This record-setting performance was fueled by over 1.016 million active gaming accounts, a rise from July’s nine-month low of 948,000 and a 41.5% increase from August 2024. Average monthly revenue per account reached $330, a figure only surpassed once before in August 2024, when it reached $332.

Online Casinos Lead the Market

Online casinos accounted for the overwhelming majority of activity, representing 89% of total turnover and approximately 80% of operator revenue. For the first time, online casino wagering exceeded $7 billion in a single month, with $7.22 billion placed in non-promotional bets—37.7% higher than the previous year. This surge contributed to a new monthly GGR record of $267.8 million, an increase of 44.4% compared to August 2024.

Leading platforms such as DraftKings Golden Nugget Online Gaming, which launched locally on August 19, helped drive growth alongside other major operators like Eilers and Krejcik Gaming. The latter, which ranks second in the US market behind DraftKings Casino, operates in multiple states including Michigan and Pennsylvania and has plans for further expansion. Additionally, Absolutebet received AGCO approval on September 5 to launch new localized brands, further diversifying Ontario’s competitive landscape. With over 50 licensed operators managing 87 sites, the market remains crowded but demand continues to rise.

Sports Betting Sees Steady Growth

While online casinos dominate, sports betting also posted gains. Ontario players wagered $765 million on sporting events in August, accounting for 9% of total iGaming revenue. This represents an 11% increase over July and a 15.2% increase compared to the same month in 2024. Sportsbooks generated $60.2 million in GGR, up 28.4% year-over-year for the month, reflecting a seasonal boost from summer sporting events. Despite this growth, sports betting revenue remains smaller than online casino earnings.

Poker continues to occupy the smallest segment of Ontario’s iGaming sector, contributing only 2% to total operator revenue and wagers. The province’s leading lottery operator, Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG), has yet to release figures for its PROLINE+ sportsbook and other platforms.

Outlook for Ontario’s iGaming Market

The August performance demonstrates that Ontario’s regulated online gambling environment continues to expand more than two years after its launch in April 2022. Both casino and sportsbook segments are growing simultaneously, signaling sustained player engagement and strong market potential. With new operators entering the market and record levels of betting and revenue being achieved, Ontario’s sector is solidifying its position as one of Canada’s leading regulated online gambling markets.
