In the last days of 2022, Sask. Lotteries issued a press release to recap all of its major lottery winnings throughout the year. According to the agency, in 2022, thirteen Saskatchewan players joined the lottery millionaire club. The single largest lottery win in the province’s history has also been recorded in 2022, as a local won a CA$70,000,000 jackpot in Lotto Max.
Founded in 1974, Sask. Lotteries is a provincial fundraiser that offers the sale of lottery products, which support more than 12,000 sport, culture, and recreation groups in Saskatchewan. Via its more than 960 retail locations, the organization offers regional games such as Western 649, Western Mx, and Poker Lotto, and national ones such as Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max.
Recording Impressive Numbers in 2022
In its 2022 review, Sask. Lotteries informs that across the provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba, players have registered the amazing 72 lottery windfalls worth CA$1 million or more in 2022. This resulted in more than CA$319 million in winnings, which is the second-highest total for the region, according to the Crown corporation.
As reported by the local lottery, in Saskatchewan, nine new millionaires have won a combined CA$150 million in lottery winnings. This includes a milestone CA$70,000,000 win by Regina local Dale McEwen who took home the prize in April 2022. To this date, his Lotto Max winning remains the largest lottery windfall recorded in the western Canadian lottery sector.
His story is a particularly interesting one as he purchased the life-changing ticket when travelling through Alberta and was headed to a ski trip in British Columbia. He purchased the ticket in Dunmore on April 1, 2022. Despite winning the major jackpot on April 1, his lottery win was not an April fools’ joke. His winning numbers were 07, 10, 18, 29, 38, 43, and 50, and were selected via Quick Pick.
Mr. McEwen and his wife had trouble believing the amazing news, and at the time they did not have any major plans for it. In the beginning, he took a screenshot of the message and sent it to his wife, as he was unsure whether it was real. After the news settled and they claimed the prize they said that a portion of the money will be used to travel around the world, and help out their family.
Alberta’s Big Winner in 2022
Meanwhile, in 2022, Alberta recorded 49 winners of prizes worth CA$1,000,000 or more. In November, the province also witnessed the winning of the largest lottery prize in its history. The name of the lucky winner is Mitchel Dyck who is a Calgary business owner and took home a stunning CA$70,000,000 Lotto Max payout.
Mr. Dyck who is a father of two shared that he is a regular lottery player who usually buys tickets when he fills up his truck for his landscaping business. At the end of October, he bought a ticket spontaneously and to his surprise, three weeks later the said ticket displayed a CA$70-million figure as a winning. For safety, he travelled to St. Albert to put the winning ticket in a safety deposit box.
