Alberta Adds IBIA Oversight Ahead of iGaming Launch

Alberta-ramps-up-integrity-monitoring-with-IBIA-approvalAlberta has approved the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) as a licensed integrity monitor ahead of the province’s regulated online gambling launch scheduled for July 13. The approval allows the organization to provide monitoring services for licensed sportsbook operators entering Alberta’s new iGaming market.

The move places integrity monitoring at the center of Alberta’s regulatory structure from the opening day of the market. IBIA will work alongside the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) to identify and report suspicious betting activity tied to regulated operators in the province.

In a statement discussing the approval, the IBIA described Alberta’s approach as a positive example of how regulated betting markets should operate.

“This is a very good practice for how regulated betting markets should develop: with clear obligations for operators, trusted information sharing and practical systems in place to identify and escalate suspicious betting activity.”

The organization added: “We are pleased to support Alberta as it opens its regulated market and to contribute to safeguarding sport and regulated sports betting in the province. Operators seeking an Alberta licence are encouraged to contact us to discuss how IBIA can support compliance and integrity objectives in the new market.”

Integrity Monitoring Included From Launch Day

Alberta’s regulated iGaming market is expected to officially open on July 13, with around 30 online sportsbooks and casino operators anticipated to launch during the initial rollout phase. The province is preparing for a competitive market featuring both private operators and the government-run Play Alberta platform.

Expected competitors include theScore Bet, FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, and Betway. With multiple established sportsbook brands preparing to enter the province, integrity oversight and suspicious betting detection are expected to play a significant role within Alberta’s regulatory framework.

IBIA confirmed that it will use its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform (MAP) to support the monitoring process. The system relies on operator intelligence and account-level betting data to assess unusual activity and generate alerts connected to potentially suspicious wagering patterns.

According to IBIA, the organization will share information with the AGLC when betting activity is considered suspicious. The goal is to connect betting market intelligence with broader sports integrity efforts as Alberta’s regulated market develops.

Ahead of the launch, Alberta regulators have continued building out the province’s framework for online gambling and sports betting. The addition of IBIA further aligns Alberta with other regulated jurisdictions that incorporate integrity monitoring requirements directly into licensing and compliance structures for sportsbook operators.

Alberta Expands IBIA’s North American Presence

The approval also strengthens IBIA’s position across North America, where the organization already operates in Ontario’s regulated market. North America accounted for 20 percent of global integrity alerts recorded in IBIA’s 2026 Integrity Report, second only to Europe at 28 percent.

The organization did not specify how many alerts originated from Canada specifically. However, IBIA data showed that tennis and mixed martial arts generated the highest number of integrity alerts across the North American region.

In its first-quarter 2026 reporting, IBIA identified 70 suspicious betting alerts spanning 10 sports worldwide. Football generated the largest number of alerts with 25 cases, followed by tennis with 16 and esports with 15.

The organization’s monitoring platform is designed to detect irregular betting behavior that could indicate match-fixing, betting manipulation, or other integrity concerns tied to regulated sports wagering markets.

Alberta’s decision to approve IBIA comes as Canadian provinces continue refining their approaches to online gambling oversight following the expansion of regulated sports betting markets across the country.

The province has been preparing for the July launch for several months, positioning the market as one of the most significant Canadian gaming expansions since Ontario opened its regulated online gambling sector in 2022.

Industry observers expect Alberta’s launch to intensify competition among major sportsbook brands seeking market share in Canada. The inclusion of integrity monitoring measures from the outset may also become a reference point for other jurisdictions considering future online gambling regulation.
