John Mongeon Sr. Memorial Trotting Series

In May Saratoga Casino Hotel started the annual John Mongeon Sr. Memorial Trotting Series at the track. The series that was canceled last year now has three US$10,000 divisions. The series kicked off on May 10, and the fastest winner of the first division’s legs was Dewey Arnold. As the three-year-old trotter trained by Dave Dewhurst recorded the fastest time of 1:57.2 for the day.

The first leg of the first division was won by Notoutofthewoods, trained by Cheryl Whitcroft. This was her biggest win as the trotter stopped the watch at 2:00.2. The final leg of the first division was then claimed by the crowd’s favorite Cindy Michelle. The horse trained by John Stark Jr. took first place in her fourth consecutive start.

Fans Return

The month of May has been a crucial one for the recovery of the New York live horse racing industry. The State allowed the return of live audiences at the tracks for the first time since the beginning of the unprecedented situation in March 2020. Visitors of the Saratoga Raceway were not required to show proof of vaccination, but back then there were other protocols such as social distancing and wearing a mask.
