Cascades Casino Delta Staff to be Represented by Unifor

Employees of the recently opened Cascades Casino Delta in British Columbia have now been unionized, informs Unifor Local 114. The labour union broke the news of the agreement with more than 200 workers from the casino property. Their unionization was possible only after the B.C. Labour Board certified the unit on January 24, 2023.

This is major news for staff members of the newly opened casino in the Province of B.C. as Unifor is the largest union in the private sector. Currently, it represents over 315,000 workers in every major sector of the Canadian economy. The unionā€™s objective is to protect all working people and their rights and fight for equality in social justice in Canada and beyond.

Welcoming the Next Wave of Workers

In the statement, Unifor shares that it is proud to welcome aboard the next group of hospitality and gaming workers who will now join thousands of other members in the industry. Unifor National President Lana Payne thanked the Delta workers for choosing the union and she believes that the new members will be now eager to start working on improving working conditions.

Thanks to the newest agreement, more than 200 workers from the casino will join the labour union. Some of the new members serve as dealers, slot attendants, guest services workers, food and beverage servers, cashiers, and security guards. And after becoming official members of Unifor Local 114 they will soon begin the process of bargaining their first-ever collective agreement.

Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor Western Regional Director has also shared a few words on the unionization of the Delta casino workers. He said that the union is now looking forward to negotiating the first contract for workers of the newest B.C. casino. He also reminds that Unifor has been aggressive in achieving industry-leading agreements across the gaming and hospitality sectors.

At the time, the union has more than 22,000 members in the gaming and hospitality industries in the country. Gaming workers had to suffer through the longest lay-offs during closures in 2020 and 2021. Also, Unifor Local 3000 represents members at Parq Casino and Resort, who are currently working on bargaining to negotiate an increase in wages to meet Metro Vancouverā€™s standards.

Septemberā€™s Grand Opening

Cascades Casino Delta is operated by Gateway Casinos & Entertainment and the company held its grand opening ceremony for the property at the end of September 2022. The venue is located at 6005, BC-17A and its gaming floor impresses 500 slots, 18 table games and stadium-like gaming. It also provides premium dining amenities such as the MATCH Eatery & Public House and The Buffet.

Shortly after debuting gaming operations, the casino reminded its patrons that gambling is not about making money but to have fun. The casino utilizes the British Columbia Lottery Corporationā€™s GameSense program and its experts are available to help gamblers in making informed choices about gambling and help them if they experience problem gambling habits.
