CA$50M Lotto 6/49 Jackpot Triggered in Western Canada

A lottery player in Western Canada has won an amazing CA$50 million by activating a Lotto 6/49 jackpot in the latest draw, confirmed PlayNow. Currently, the identity of the lucky winner is unknown but their ticket has matched the winning numbers for the Gold Ball jackpot in Saturday December 9 draw. Lotto 6/49 is a nationwide draw-based game which is drawn twice per week in Canada. Since mid-September 2022, the offering has come with a new format, and now there are two big jackpots with each round. First is the Classic or guaranteed one of CA$5 million and then there is the Gold Ball jackpot that can reach the whooping CA$60 million.

PlayNow is Searching for the Winner

According to the PlayNow platform, a player in the western provinces saw their ticket match the winning Gold Ball numbers 25957733-01 during the Lotto 6/49 draw on Saturday, December 9. Thus, winning a life-changing prize of CA$50 million. Due to safety reasons, the identity of the winner is kept a secret until they come up and take home the windfall.

It has also been quite some until since a player has claimed the main prize of the game, as the last one dates back to the September 27 draw, when an Ontario local snatched CA$68 million. In the meantime, as for the latest drawing, no player was able to claim the CA$1 million White Ball prize, the CA$5 million Classic Draw prize, or the CA$500k Classic Draw Extra.

Still, two lottery ticket holders claimed some cash from the Classic Draw’s second prize by matching five of the six winning numbers and the bonus number. Each of them will receive a cheque for CA$109,347.90. The two tickets were in Quebec and Ontario. Now, the Gold Ball will restart from CA$10 million, and the next draw is on track for Wednesday, December 13.

After the introduction of the new and improved Lotto 6/49 players also had to wait for a while before the first big winner. However, in the October 29, 2022 round of the game, Jean-Marc Poirier’s ticket became the first one to trigger a Gold Ball draw. The Lanaudière resident took home a hefty CA$36 million prize. The first winning ticket belongs to Debra and Kenneth Skitch from Bowmanville and they have been playing the lottery for over 40 years. The married couple opts for birthdays and birth months when it comes to selecting their lucky numbers. Meanwhile, the other half of the jackpot went to the 54-year-old Shane King who resides in New Tecumseh.
